May 20, 2023Chiang Rai Tour: 2 Days / 1 Night Itinerary
This is a sample 2 days/ 1 night Chiang Rai itinerary that outlines the non-touristic and authentic things you can see and do in Chiang Rai in 2 days. It focuses on exploring hill tribe villages and cultural discovery in the countryside of Chiang Rai.
Day 1) Hilltribe Villages
Pick up from your hotel in Chiang Rai and head out into the countryside. With our local guide we will take you to visit authentic hill tribe villages:
1) Yao hill tribe
2) Akha hill tribe
3) Karen hill tribe
Then we will take you to visit a Kayan Long Neck tribe family. Note that this is not a tourist Long Neck village, but through our relationship with a Kayan Long neck tribe family, they will welcome you to their homestay. You can cook local dinner together with your guide and host family then stay overnight at the homestay or a local guesthouse.
Day 2) Hilltribe Villages – Hot Springs – Back to Chiang Rai
After breakfast at the homestay, we will depart the homestay and visit a Lahu Hill tribe village. This village is still very traditional with dirt paths and bamboo stilt huts. Learn about the the Lahu culture and way of life. Then we will depart the village and visit some hot springs and a waterfall where you can play in the waters. After this we will head back to Chiang Rai.
2 Days/1 Night itinerary (including Tourist highlights )
If you wanted to include the touristic highlights of Chiang Rai such as the White Temple, Golden Triangle, Tham Luang, Black House and Blue Temple we can modify this 2d/1n itinerary to include these sights too. Simply let us know 🙂
Is 2 days in Chiang Rai enough?
We suggest that 2 days is the minimum needed for Chiang Rai. There is so much to discover in the countryside, and with the distance and time needed to reach these rural areas, you’ll really need at least an overnight in the province. After a minimum of 2 days, if you wanted to add 1-2 days on the end for sightseeing such as the Golden Triangle, White temple, Blue Temple and Black House this is also recommended. However there are so many hidden gems in Chiang Rai that you may want to stay longer to explore these. For example during the winter months Phu Chi Fah mountain offers breathtaking sunset and sunrise views over the mountainous Thai-Laos border. This is not well known by foreign tourists, and mostly visited by Thai tourists. To read more about Phu Chi Fah click here on Thailands Best Kept Secret.
