Authentic Hilltribe Village Tours

There are many touristic hilltribe villages in Thailand, and for the discerned traveller it can be difficult to visit authentic hilltribe villages in a non-intrusive way.  Our project works alongside Lawa and Karen hilltribe communities in Mae La Noi district in Mae Hong Son Province on various development programs and runs small scale private tours that supplement the locals existing livelihoods as farmers. These tours allow you to gain an authentic insight into hilltribe culture and way of life but in a very natural way whilst giving back to local people too.

The villages are tucked away in the mountains of Mae La Noi just 55km from Mae Sariang town and can be visited on a 1 day trip or longer.  The scenic drive up the windy mountain road 1,200m above sea level, offers beautiful views of the rolling hills and fields.  These villages remain untouched to foreigners, get a real insight into how the Lawa and Karen hilltribes live, their way of life, culture, traditions and customs. In the villages you can:

  • Learn how to make silver jewellery from the village silversmith
  • Have a go at weaving cotton using a traditional back-strap loom
  • Try traditional hilltribe food and share a meal with a hilltribe family
  • Learn about how the villagers farm and live off the land
  • Take a nature walk and learn about the ecology. Our guide will show you the seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs of the forests which you can pick along the way.
  • Visit hilltribe schools
  • Visit a mountain temple where Pat’s mum is head nun. The top of this temple offers a great view point of the mountains
  • If you’re lucky you may catch a village celebration such as a spirit festival or wedding
  • Befriend villagers who always welcome visitors
