Authentic Hilltribe Village Tours

For the discerned traveller it can be difficult to visit genuine hilltribe villages in a non-intrusive way, there are many manufactured hilltribe villages in Northern Thailand which involve entrance tickets.  Our project works alongside Lawa and Karen hilltribe communities in Mae La Noi district in Mae Hong Son Province on various development programs and runs small scale tours which supplements locals existing livelihoods as farmers. These tours allow you to gain an authentic insight into hilltribe culture and way of life but in a very natural way whilst giving back to local people too.

The villages are tucked away in the mountains of Mae La Noi just 55km from Mae Sariang town. This can be done on a 1 day trip or longer. It is a very scenic drive along winding roads up to the mountains which are 1,200m above sea level. With stunning vistas along the way and views of rolling mountains and paddy fields. These villages remain untouched to foreigners , get a real insight into how the Lawa and Karen live, their way of life, culture, traditions and customs. In the villages you can:

  • Learn how to make silver from the village silversmith
  • Learn how to make cotton
  • Try traditional hilltribe cuisine and share a meal with a hilltribe family
  • Learn about how the villagers farm and live off the land
  • Take a nature walk and learn about the ecology. Our guide will show you the seasonal fruits, vegetables and herbs of the forests which you can pick along the way.
  • Visit hilltribe schools
  • Visit La Up temple where Pat’s mum is head nun. The top of this temple offers a great view point of the mountains
  • If you’re lucky you may catch a village celebration such as a spirit festival or wedding
  • Befriend villagers who always welcome visitors
